PRIMARY EDUCATION

The Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art organises educational programmes for kindergarten and primary school groups throughout the school year. Between September 2006 and June 2007 we welcomed primary schoolchildren to these programmes.

The educational programmes are designed on the basis of the works in the permanent collection as well as on those in temporary exhibitions. Each programme lasts 1-1.30 hours, and groups are limited to 20–30 children.

The objects of these educational programmes is for the children to:

  • To entertain and familiarize children with the museum artworks.
  • To encourage children confidence and promote their ability to raise questions about the artworks.
  • To activate the senses and emotions of the children through their contact with art works.
  • To lead to a “subjective reading” of artworks in various ways, depending on the age and the prior knowledge of the child
  • To exchange ideas
  • To experiment with different materials and techniques.

The educational programmes are based on:

  • the children’s observation of the works
  • discovery of their chief characteristics through questions and discussion
  • focusing on points that stimulate the children’s imagination and critical thinking
  • engaging creatively with the works through a variety of activities.

The educational programs typically include the following steps:

  • Step 1: Sending information material about the museum exhibits and the hosting exhibition concept to schools and teachers.
  • Step 2: Visits to the Museum:
    • a) challenge of the children’s interest for the artworks selected by the program design. (Puppet show, storytelling, discussion, etc.)
    • b) Acquaintance with the default artworks - experiential approach.
  • Step 3: Participation in group or individual activity in the art lab of the museum.
  • Step 4: Discussion, clarification of issues and proposed activities in the classroom based on the stimulus and inspiration for children to visit the museum.
